When living in a country with as many beach towns as New Zealand, it’s hard to resist the classic fish and chips. With as many options as there are beaches (probably more, to be honest) it’s hard to decide on the best shop in town. Of course, there is only one sure way to find out: try them all! And with that in mind, Eddy and I went on a fish and chips eating mission.
First up, my first fish and chips down under. We had these at a bar on the waterfront, right here in Auckland. While the setting was posh, and the sauces were unusual but yummy, the fish and the chips left something to be desired.
Next up, what might just be our favourite. After the disappointing first experience, we drove all the way to Matakana the very next day for what Eddy promised to be great fish in a yummy batter. I was not disappointed.
Obviously the beer sampler didn’t hurt either. Definitely top of our list, if only it were closer.
And of course there is the classic option: take-out wrapped in paper. Generally characterized by large servings, this is definitely the less expensive option. It comes with the added bonus of a romantic seaside picnic, this time in Orewa. On the downside, tomato sauce (better known as ketchup) costs extra. A lot extra.
It’s so hard to find good fish and chips in Auckland!

Agreed, we always head out of the city when we want fish and chips. If you’re ever in Matakana try the ones at the village pub 🙂
